On Wednesday, the FDA announced the recall of 1,000 pounds of butter, but now new details are emerging about its real impact on consumers.

There’s An Important New Update For This Week’s Butter Recall

Yesterday, the FDA reported that major dairy company Cabot Creamery was recalling 1,701 pounds of butter from seven states due to potential bacteria contamination. However, the butter company is now clarifying details from the FDA announcement.
In a statement shared with The Healthy, a spokesperson for Cabot Creamery said, “There have been a variety of news reports that are incomplete and have dramatically misrepresented this recall with respect to the risk it posed to consumers.”
So, what should consumers know about the Extra Creamy Premium Butter recall?
First, the company wants it to be clear what the only product recalled was the 8 oz Extra Creamy Premium Butter, Sea Salted. All recalled items came from one lot with the code 090925-055, and 99.5% of the affected butter was “recovered before reaching customers.”
Second, only 17 packages, for a total of 8.5 pounds, were not recovered in time and made it to retail locations. This means a relatively small amount was actually available for purchase. Further, the only state that received these items was Vermont, so residents in New York, Pennsylvania, Maine, Connecticut, New Hampshire, and Arkansas need not worry.
“Agri-Mark has identified the cause and has taken the appropriate internal actions to address it. No other products were affected,” according to the company’s statement. “Agri-Mark is dedicated to food safety and producing quality products and is always monitoring its products for compliance.”
As mentioned in the FDA’s announcement, the recall is due to an “elevated level of coliform bacteria.” This bacteria often points to fecal or environmental contamination in dairy products, explains an article in Frontiers in Microbiology.
The FDA has indicated the event to be a Class III recall, meaning the butter is “not likely to cause adverse health consequences.” Additionally, Cabot Creamery highlights that there have been “no reports of illness or consumer complaints.”
Cabot Creamery urges anyone concerned about the butter recall to contact them at 1-888-792-2268 on weekdays from 9:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. ET. Consumers can also email the company at [email protected] or visit the website www.cabotcreamery.com.
